What is AP Media API?

For the first time, you can access all your licensed multimedia content programmatically through a simple API interface.

The API allows you to receive a continuous feed of news content or perform granular searches across archives of all media types.

Tips

  • For tighter integration of your system with AP Media API, you can write your own custom program for processing a feed or searching and downloading content. To learn more, see AP Media API Developer documentation.
  • Alternatively, you can use AP Media API portal and agent for automatic downloads of content available via AP Media API feeds.

What type of content is available via AP Media API?

Media types include text/story with linked curated content, pictures, print graphics, video and audio.

Accessing content programmatically via the API?

  • 30 days of content is available, as well as the full library of current and archive audio and print graphics content. Access will subsequently be expanded to include AP image and video archives.
  • AP Media API supports the same content as AP WebFeeds and AP Newsroom, including content available via AP Content API and AP Breaking News API; depending on your contract terms.

Using AP Media API portal and agent?

  • Up to the last 72 hours of content is available.
  • AP Media API portal and agent support the same content as AP WebFeeds; depending on your contract terms.

What are AP Media API portal and agent?

AP Media API portal and agent allow you to automatically download a continuous feed of news content available through AP Media API.

AP Media Agent is a Java application for content ingestion. AP Media API portal is a website for configuring and managing content ingest agents.

You can download content for your entitlements; for example, (products, packages and AP Newsroom Followed Topics. Content files and metadata are saved to specified folders watched by your content management system (CMS). Get Started >>

The agent has access to content from up to the last 72 hours.

What is AP Newsroom?

AP Newsroom (newsroom.ap.org) is AP's new multimedia platform, created with input from our customers, which permits you to work "anywhere, anytime, on any device." It is story-centric and enables you to easily find not just the linked media, but also all media content related to AP stories.

You can create Followed Topics for your favorite subjects in AP Newsroom and get content feeds for these Followed Topics via AP Media API or AP Media Agent.

In the near future, you will also be able to select one or more On-Demand content items of interest in AP Newsroom and have the content automatically delivered to you via AP Media API or AP Media Agent.

What are entitlements?

Entitlements are AP products and packages to which your organization is entitled, Followed Topics created in AP Newsroom and On-Demand content items selected in AP Newsroom.

Products

A product is a standard AP news service or report, which is defined by a name, a product ID number and a description; for example, "AP Online National News."

Packages

A package is a bundle of products.

Followed Topics

Followed Topics are user-customizable searches created within the AP Newsroom portal, based upon criteria you select. If you save a Followed Topic feed in AP Newsroom and then ingest the feed using AP Media Agent or AP Media API, any new content matching the search criteria will automatically be sent to your CMS. On-Demand allows you to select either an individual story (and, if any, its linked media) or an individual media item in AP Newsroom and have the items automatically delivered via AP Media API or AP Media Agent. Learn more >>

Followed Topic Feed Delivery

Followed Topics allow you to monitor incoming content for your favorite news subjects.

How do I create a Followed Topic?

To create a Followed Topic, visit newsroom.ap.org, perform a search and click Follow in the Search bar.

How do I select my Followed Topic content in AP Newsroom?

  1. In AP Newsroom, go to the Followed Topic management page and edit your desired Followed Topic.
  2. Enable Create feed; then click Update.

Note

The Create feed option can also be enabled when you create a Followed Topic.

How do I ingest Followed Topic feeds?

If you are using AP Media Agent
  1. On the AP Media API portal, navigate to your desired profile.
  2. On the Select Content tab, click the Followed Topics tab and select one or more Followed Topic feeds.
  3. Click Save Profile at the bottom of the page to save your selections.
If you are accessing the content programmatically via AP Media API

Use the following request URL:

https://api.ap.org/media/v/content/feed?q=followedtopicid:709523&apikey={apikey}

Where 709523 is the desired Followed Topic ID. You can obtain the Followed Topic ID from the ID column on AP Newsroom's Followed Topics management page.

On-Demand Content Delivery (coming soon)

On-Demand delivery is very flexible, allowing you to more carefully select the content to send to AP Media Agent or AP Media API.

How do I select my On-Demand content in AP Newsroom?

  1. In AP Newsroom, perform a search to locate the desired content.
  2. Click Send to On-Demand from a content item's detail view.

How do I ingest my On-Demand content?

If you are using AP Media Agent
  1. On the AP Media API portal, navigate to your desired profile.
  2. On the Select Content tab, in the AP NewsRoom On-Demand section, select the On-Demand check box.
  3. Click Save Profile at the bottom of the page to save your selections.
If you are accessing the content programmatically via AP Media API

Use the following request URL:
